Buddy was born as Michael C. Stathis in Queens, New York, in May 1985. He started acting in 2014 in the movie Heaven Knows What. He got the role after meeting filmmaker Josh Safdie through their friend Arielle Holmes. Buddy had just been released from Rikers Island jail for a drug problem when he met Josh. During the filming of Heaven Knows What, Buddy was running from the police because he didn’t want to go to a drug treatment program. By the time the movie was shown at the Venice Film Festival in August 2014, Buddy was already in jail.

“I still look back at it. If I had gone to that program, I wouldn’t have been in Heaven Knows What, and I probably wouldn’t be an actor right now. That’s the honest truth. I wouldn’t,” Buddy told SSense.
