Her son-in-law, Olivier Bomsel, confirmed her death on Wednesday in Nogent-sur-Marne, a suburb of Paris, according to Le Figaro.
Presle gained international acclaim with her portrayal of a nurse entangled in a scandalous affair with a student (Gérard Philipe) in Devil in the Flesh (1947), a World War I drama lauded by the National Board of Review as one of the year’s top 10 films.

Her Hollywood journey began with notable performances opposite Power in the Technicolor war epic American Guerrilla in the Philippines (1950), directed by Fritz Lang, and alongside Flynn in The Adventures of Captain Fabian (1951), directed by William Marshall. However, disillusioned by the tepid response to these ventures, Presle returned to France after divorcing Marshall in 1954.

Born Micheline Nicole Julia Émilienne Chassagne on August 22, 1922, in Paris to an investment banker, Presle initially adopted the stage name Jacqueline Presle, inspired by a character she played, after garnering attention for her role as the leader of a group of troubled girls in G.W. Pabst’s Young Girls in Trouble (1939).
Presle’s career continued to flourish, with notable appearances in Hollywood productions like If a Man Answers (1962), where she played a former French showgirl and mother to Sandra Dee’s character, alongside Bobby Darin. She also starred opposite Newman in the espionage thriller The Prize (1963).
Returning to French cinema, Presle graced the small screen from 1965 to 1971 with her role in the popular comedy series Les Saintes Chéries.
Her extensive filmography also included notable titles such as Male Hunt (1964), The Legend of Frenchie King (1971), Samuel Fuller’s Thieves After Dark (1984), and Alain Resnais’ I Want to Go Home (1989), earning her a César nomination for the latter.
In recognition of her remarkable contributions to cinema, Presle was honored with an honorary César in 2004.
Tragically, her daughter, acclaimed director Tonie Marshall, passed away in 2020 at the age of 68, having made history with a César win for Venus Beauty Institute.
