Robert William Pickton, infamous as the “Pig Farmer Killer” or “the Butcher,” is a name synonymous with terror and horror in Canadian criminal history.

But behind this notorious figure lie the roots of his upbringing and family background.

Robert Pickton was born to Leonard Francis Pickton and Louise Helene Arnal, into a family deeply rooted in pig farming in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Located just 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Vancouver, the Pickton family farm would become the backdrop for Robert’s descent into infamy.

From a young age, Robert and his younger brother, David Francis Pickton, were immersed in the grueling realities of farm life under the stern gaze of their parents.

Their mother, Louise Helene Arnal, was known for her demanding nature, prioritizing the needs of the farm’s livestock over her sons’ well-being.

She enforced long hours of labor, often neglecting their personal hygiene and sending them to school in unwashed, dirty clothes redolent of manure.

Robert’s sister, Linda Louise Wright, was spared from this environment and sent to live with relatives in Vancouver, deemed unsuitable for a young girl. Meanwhile, Robert and David toiled away on the farm, their childhood marked by toil and neglect.

Robert’s relationship with his parents was fraught with difficulties. While he shared a strong attachment to his mother, his father, Leonard Francis Pickton, was described as abusive, contributing to the troubled dynamics within the family.

Despite the challenges of his upbringing, Robert Pickton’s life took a dark turn when he dropped out of school in 1963. He embarked on a career as a meat-cutter before eventually returning to the family farm, where his actions would later shock the world.

In 1994 and 1995, Robert, along with his siblings, inherited the family pig farm. This inheritance would ultimately become entangled with the gruesome crimes that would stain Robert Pickton’s name forever.
