MacPherson was discovered while competing in the Kurnell triathlon in southern Sydney when he was 16. MacPherson competed in the Hawaiian Ironman in 2009, finishing in 10 hours and 32 minutes. Macpherson has twice qualified for the Ironman 70.3 world championships, in 2013 and 2014.
