The Great Lakes are a series of interconnected freshwater lakes located primarily in the upper mid-east region of North America. They connect to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River and constitute the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth by total area, and second largest by total volume.

Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that is entirely within the United States. It is bordered by the U.S. states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. The other four Great Lakes are shared by the U.S. and Canada.

So, while the Great Lakes region includes much of the Canadian province of Ontario and portions of eight U.S. states, Lake Michigan stands out as the only Great Lake that does not touch Canada.
