“Land of Bad” is a military action film that follows Air Force Sergeant J.J. “Playboy” Kinney (played by Liam Hemsworth) during a hostage extraction mission gone awry.

Kinney is a capable but inexperienced soldier, and the film focuses on his journey as he shoots, climbs, and wades through enemy territory in search of a high-priority hostage—a CIA spy gathering intelligence on a dangerous Russian arms dealer. The movie’s antagonists are portrayed as bloodthirsty terrorists, with some scenes showing their psychopathic tendencies as they torture and execute prisoners in a grim cave prison.

Russell Crowe co-stars as Captain Eddie “Reaper” Grimm, a socially awkward but professionally adept drone pilot who guides Kinney away from terrorists and missiles. However, Grimm’s role becomes irritating due to his explicit focus on the military’s failure to support capable professionals like himself. The film aims to be a post-“Black Hawk Down” rescue mission thriller but often veers into dramatized lectures about what’s wrong with the American military and modern warfare.

While “Land of Bad” may have compelling action choreography and filmmaking, its portrayal of hero 1 (Kinney) and hero 2 (Grimm) sometimes lacks balance. Kinney rarely slows down long enough to explain himself, while Grimm’s neurotic mess of a character takes umbrage with snotty Colonel Virgil Packett (played by Daniel MacPherson). Despite its flaws, the film provides an intense military action experience with strong performances from its lead actors.
As for whether “Land of Bad” is based on a true story, it is not. The movie is based on a fictional script written by Jesse Chatham and Erin Dignam. Producers Allyn Stewart and Lora Kennedy developed the story by Chatham and brought it to Robin Wright, who was working on “House of Cards” and had directed some of its episodes.
So while the film may feel intense and realistic at times, it is purely a work of fiction. If you’re interested in other shows or movies inspired by real events, you might want to explore different genres or historical dramas. However, “Land of Bad” itself does not have any basis in reality.
