From 2002 to 2013, Randall Darius Jackson, an American record executive, television personality, and musician, served as a judge on American Idol. As a session musician, Jackson started his career in the 1980s providing bass guitar accompaniment to a variety of jazz, pop, rock, and R&B artists.

After undergoing gastric bypass surgery in 2003, Jackson shed 114 pounds, or 52 kg. In a February 2008 TV ad, he revealed that he has type 2 diabetes.
Following Journey’s abrupt breakup with founding member Ross Valory, Jackson was rehired as bassist in May 2020. Jackson had previously performed in the band’s Raised on Radio album and tour in 1986.
