As Ontiveros noted, “I’m proud to represent those hands that labor in this country,” she once estimated that she had portrayed a maid on stage and television at least 150 times. She wished to see more diverse roles available to Latina performers.

Following a fight with liver cancer, Ontiveros passed away at the age of 69 on July 26, 2012, at Presbyterian Hospital in Whittier, California.
