Katharine Houghton Hepburn was an American actress who spent six decades as a Hollywood leading lady. She was recognized for her headstrong independence, energetic attitude, and outspokenness, and she cultivated a movie character that reflected this public image, frequently portraying strong-willed, smart women.

Hepburn left university with the goal of becoming an actor. The day following graduation, she flew to Baltimore to meet Edwin H. Knopf, the owner of a successful stock theatrical company. Knopf was impressed with her eagerness and put her in his current play, The Czarina.

Hepburn was diagnosed with an aggressive malignancy in her neck in May 2003. She died of cardiac arrest on June 29, 2003, at the Hepburn family home in Fenwick, Connecticut, after it was decided not to medically intervene.

Born to Thomas Norval Hepburn, a urologist at Hartford Hospital, and Katharine Martha Houghton Hepburn, a notable feminist advocate, she was the second of six children.

Katherine’s siblings were; Tom, Katharine’s eldest sibling, born in 1905, tragically passed away at the age of 16 in 1921. Despite his closeness to Katharine, Tom faced challenges, including a childhood illness that led to a tick. Tom’s demise, found hanging in New York City, remains shrouded in mystery, with suicide and a magic trick gone awry both considered possibilities.

Richard, born in 1911, led a life largely veiled in obscurity. Notable for his work as a playwright, he married Estelle Morrison, and their union resulted in four children before ending in divorce.

Robert, born in 1913, pursued a career in medicine, ultimately becoming the Director of Urology at Hartford Hospital. After retiring in 1973, he enjoyed a lengthy life, and his marriage to Susanna Floyd endured for 64 years.

Marion, one of Katharine’s younger sisters, born in 1918, contributed significantly to history as a historian. Co-founder of the Greater Hartford Urban League, she published seven books and married Ellsworth S. Grant, former Mayor of West Hartford.

Margaret, the youngest sibling born in 1920, maintained a private life, with limited details available about her. A librarian by profession, she passed away in 2006 at the age of 86.
