Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Holtmann’s journey to coaching stardom is intertwined with the unwavering support and guidance of his parents, John and Patty Holtmann.

A proud native of Kentucky, Holtmann’s early years were shaped by his love for basketball, particularly the University of Kentucky basketball team, which he avidly followed during his formative years.

His passion for the sport blossomed during his high school days at Jessamine County High School, where he honed his skills on the basketball court under the guidance of dedicated coaches.

Throughout his collegiate career, Holtmann found himself immersed in the basketball culture, eventually landing a spot on the Taylor University basketball team under the mentorship of NAIA Hall of Fame coach Paul Patterson.

It was during his time at Taylor University that Holtmann forged lifelong connections, including a friendship with future colleague and boss, John Groce.

Holtmann’s journey in basketball was not solely defined by his on-court achievements but also by his academic pursuits. He graduated from Taylor University in 1994 with a degree in psychology, laying the foundation for his multifaceted approach to coaching.

Continuing his academic endeavors, Holtmann earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from Ball State University in 2000, further enhancing his expertise in sports management.

Despite his professional achievements and accolades, Holtmann’s connection to his family remains paramount.

In a heartwarming exchange between mother and son in 2021, Patty Holtmann’s keen observation during an Ohio State basketball game prompted a thoughtful response from her son, highlighting the enduring bond between the Holtmann family members.
