The name Fat Tuesday comes from the tradition of eating rich and fatty foods on this day, as a way of indulging before the fasting and penance of Lent. In some areas of the United States, particularly in Louisiana, it is simply called “Mardi Gras Day” or “Mardi Gras.”

Additionally, in many Latin American countries and regions with strong Catholic traditions, it is known as “Carnival Tuesday” or “Martes de Carnaval.” These names all refer to the same day, which is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and marks the end of the Carnival season.

The festival season varies from city to city, as some traditions, such as the one in New Orleans, Louisiana, consider Mardi Gras to stretch the entire period from Twelfth Night (the last night of Christmas which begins Epiphany) to Ash Wednesday. Others treat the final three-day period before Ash Wednesday as the Mardi Gras.
