Fat Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras, is a Christian holiday that marks the last day of feasting and celebration before the start of Lent, a period of fasting and penance that lasts for 40 days until Easter.

The name Fat Tuesday comes from the French word Mardi, meaning Tuesday, and Gras, meaning fat. It reflects the tradition of using up all the rich and fatty foods, such as meat, eggs, cheese and butter, that were forbidden during Lent.

The origin of Fat Tuesday can be traced back to ancient pagan festivals of spring and fertility, such as Saturnalia and Lupercalia in Rome. When Christianity spread to Europe, these festivals were incorporated into the new faith as a way of easing the transition. Thus, the days before Lent became a time of merrymaking, dancing, masquerading and indulging in food and drink.

Some of the most famous ones are Brazil, Venice and New Orleans, where Carnival or Carnaval attracts millions of tourists and revelers every year. They feature colorful parades, costumes, music and entertainment that showcase the local culture and history.
Fat Tuesday is not a fixed date, but depends on the date of Easter, which varies according to the lunar calendar. It can fall anywhere between February 3 and March 9. In 2024, Fat Tuesday will be on February 13.
Whether you call it Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day or Paczki Day, it is a day to enjoy life and have fun before the solemn season of Lent begins.
