The Netherlands legalized euthanasia in 2002 for individuals enduring ‘unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement’, resulting in a notable increase in euthanasia cases in recent years.

The couple had been grappling with fragile health conditions for some time. In 2019, van Agt suffered a brain hemorrhage during a speech at a Palestinian commemoration event, from which he never fully recovered.

Tributes have poured in for the esteemed diplomat, who served as the Christian Democrat Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1977 to 1982.
The Rights Forum, a human rights organization founded by van Agt in his later years, announced the joint euthanasia on Friday.
Following a farewell service, the couple, who shared more than 70 years of companionship, were laid to rest in the city of Nijmegen this week.
They are survived by their three children.
