Umenyiora attended Auburn High School in Alabama, where he began to showcase his athletic talents, particularly in football. His exceptional skills on the field earned him a scholarship to play college football at Troy University.

During his college career at Troy, Umenyiora demonstrated his prowess as a defensive lineman, impressing scouts with his speed, agility, and ability to rush the passer.
