The Nupe are an ethnic group native to North Central Nigeria. They are the dominant ethnic group in Niger State and a minority in Kwara State. The Nupe are also present in Kogi State and The Federal Capital Territory.

What do Nupe people call their God?
The Nupe, a semi-nomadic people living in northern Nigeria, revere Soko. In the beginning, this creator god told men how to take advantage of certain cosmic forces using ritual, kuti. But he also put the power of witchcraft into the world.

Soko is the sky god, who created the world and then withdrew himself from communion with man. God, having created the world, gave men access to certain mystical forces, making them at the same time subject to these and leaving them to make use of these powers and the material world.
In the beginning, there was a man called Ancestor Ada and a woman called Ancestor Adama. They had two children, one male, and one female, who in turn begot two children, male and female. The male child died immediately after birth, while the girl remained alive. When she grew up, she spoke a strange language that her parents could not understand. But a bull who one day rose from the river when the girl was standing on the bank understood the language.
