While his musical prowess is widely celebrated, the story of his upbringing and the influence of his parents, Kakkar Singh and Aditi Singh, offer valuable insights into the artist’s journey to stardom.

Born on April 25, 1987, in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal, Arijit Singh’s early life was steeped in the rich cultural tapestry of India.

His father, Kakkar Singh, hails from a Punjabi Sikh background, while his mother, Aditi Singh, is Bengali Hindu. Their union symbolizes the beautiful diversity and harmony inherent in Indian society.

Singh’s musical journey began at a tender age, nurtured by the melodious strains of Indian classical music that filled his home.

With his maternal aunt and grandmother well-versed in Indian classical music, and his mother proficient in both singing and tabla, young Arijit was immersed in a musical environment from the start. His maternal uncle’s expertise in playing the tabla further enriched his musical education.

Educationally, Singh attended Raja Bijay Singh High School and later pursued his studies at Sripat Singh College, affiliated with the University of Kalyani. Despite being a decent student academically, his passion for music eclipsed all else.

Recognizing his innate talent, Singh’s parents made the decision to provide him with professional music training, setting him on the path to artistic excellence.

Under the tutelage of renowned musicians such as Rajendra Prasad Hazari for Indian classical music and Dhirendra Prasad Hazari for tabla, Singh honed his skills and expanded his repertoire.

Additionally, Birendra Prasad Hazari imparted knowledge of Rabindra Sangeet and pop music, further enriching Singh’s musical palette.

Throughout his formative years, Singh drew inspiration from a diverse array of musical influences, ranging from Western classical composers like Mozart and Beethoven to legendary Indian artists such as Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan, and Zakir Hussain.

Tragically, Singh’s close-knit family suffered a devastating loss when his beloved mother, Aditi Singh, passed away from a cerebral stroke on May 20, 2021, at the age of 52. Her untimely demise left a profound void in Singh’s life, underscoring the importance of family and the enduring impact of maternal love and support.
