Hungary’s political landscape was rocked by a seismic event as conservative President Katalin Novák resigned on Saturday, February 10, 2024, amidst a storm of public outrage following a controversial pardon she granted.

The pardon, issued to a man convicted as an accomplice in a child sexual abuse case, unleashed an unprecedented political scandal that reverberated throughout the nation.

In a televised address, the 46-year-old Novák announced her decision to step down from the presidency, a position she had held since 2022.

Her resignation followed more than a week of mounting public anger over the revelation that she had granted a presidential pardon in April 2023 to an individual convicted of concealing a series of child sexual abuses in a state-run children’s home.

“I decided in favor of clemency in April of last year in the belief that the convict did not abuse the vulnerability of the children entrusted to him. I made a mistake,” Novák conceded. “I apologize to those I have hurt and to any victims who may have felt I am not standing up for them.

“As head of state, I am addressing you for the last time today. I resign from the office of president of the republic,” she concluded, bringing an end to a tumultuous chapter in Hungarian politics.

Novák’s departure marks a rare moment of political turmoil for Hungary’s ruling nationalist party Fidesz, which has wielded power with a constitutional majority since 2010.

Led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Fidesz has faced criticism for eroding democratic institutions and exerting control over the electoral system and media.

As a former vice president of Fidesz and a staunch ally of Orbán, Novák had previously served as the minister for families before assuming the presidency. Throughout her career, she had been a vocal advocate for traditional family values and the safeguarding of children’s welfare.

Despite being the first female president in Hungary’s history and the youngest person to hold the office, Novák’s tenure came to an abrupt end following the controversial pardon.
