Conventional housing construction in Melbourne and Australia performs quite well under a seismic event. Some are near major cities, but there is the potential for a large earthquake to occur “pretty much anywhere in Australia”. “The one probably nearest to Melbourne that most people are aware of is the Selwyn fault that runs along the Mornington Peninsula.

Are Melbourne apartments earthquake-proof?

Melbourne’s central business district (CBD) is vulnerable, as nearly half its buildings are of unreinforced masonry construction. In the event of an earthquake, falling masonry from these buildings could greatly add to human casualties.
