Billy Strings plays guitars made by Preston Thompson Guitars, a company that he signed an endorsement deal with in 2016. He also plays a custom-made guitar that his grandfather built in prison, a Roy Noble dreadnought, and a Fender Acoustasonic Telecaster.

Billy Strings learned to play guitar from his stepfather, Terry Barber, an accomplished amateur bluegrass musician who introduced him to the genre and taught him how to flatpick.
