Piñera, a prominent businessman and politician, served as the president of Chile from 2010 to 2014 and again from 2018 to 2022, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s history.

The news of Piñera’s death sent shockwaves across Chile and beyond. According to reports from La Nación, Piñera survived the initial crash, but the impact left him unconscious and unable to remove his safety belt, leading to his tragic drowning.

In response to the devastating news, President Gabriel Boric declared three days of national mourning and announced plans for a state funeral to honor Piñera’s legacy.

The funeral arrangements, to be organized by Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren, include a private ceremony for family members on the morning of February 7, followed by public visitation at La Moneda Palace.

On February 9, Piñera’s body will be transported to La Moneda for a eulogy by President Boric, followed by a requiem mass at Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral officiated by Archbishop Fernando Chomalí Garib.

Piñera’s remarkable journey from the son of a Christian Democratic politician and diplomat to becoming Chile’s first democratically elected conservative president since 1958 was marked by his dedication to public service and commitment to his country’s development.

Internationally, Piñera was known for his role in the miner rescue operation, which was immortalized in the 2014 movie “The 33.” His legacy extends beyond Chilean borders, leaving an indelible mark on global history.

As Chile mourns the loss of a beloved leader, Sebastián Piñera’s contributions to the nation and the world will be remembered with reverence and gratitude. His vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving the people of Chile will continue to inspire future generations as they strive to build a brighter future for their country.
