The Aphex Twin logo, designed by graphic and type designer Paul Nicholson, is a captivating and enigmatic symbol associated with the masterful electronic music of Richard D. James (AKA Aphex Twin). While it appears to be the letter ‘A’ at first glance, it transcends mere alphabetic representation.

Viewed in isolation, it becomes a mysterious, otherworldly shape—an organic space thing. The logo’s simplicity and nuance perfectly mirror the Aphex synth soundscape. Interestingly, the logo was initially conceived for a different project: Paul’s client, the skatewear label Anarchic Adjustment, sought an early ’90s ‘alien’ vibe logo.

Paul pitched some ‘alien’ vibe ‘A’ concepts, which were rejected. Richard D. James, then a fellow student at Kingston University, caught sight of these ‘A’s and appreciated their direction. The amorphic shape was hand-drawn using circle templates and rulers, making its debut on the ‘Xylem Tube’ sleeve in 1992.

Since then, the Aphex ‘A’ has graced various album covers, including ‘Selected Ambient Works 85–92’, ‘Ambient Works Vol. II’, and the Grammy-winning ‘Syro’. Despite its unconventional form—unbalanced, blobby, and illegible—the Aphex ‘A’ remains infectious and iconic, defying typical letterform conventions.

In 2014, Aphex Twin released the album Syro on Warp, winning the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album. On 3 June 2017, Aphex Twin performed at the Field Day festival and released a limited edition EP, London 03.06.17.
