He comes from a family with a history of success in banking and business, despite setbacks during the 1929 stock market crash.

His father, James Jay Secor, continued this tradition as an Episcopal school headmaster. Though less is known about his mother, music was clearly a part of their household.

Secor’s journey into music began early, sparked by a mouth harp in fourth grade and nurtured through jam sessions with future bandmate Christopher “Critter” Fuqua by seventh grade.

Together with Robert St. Ours, they formed the Route 11 Boys, honing their skills at open mics. A scholarship to Phillips Exeter Academy expanded Secor’s musical horizons, introducing him to the banjo and the sounds of artists like Jerry Garcia and Bob Dylan.

In 1998, Secor co-founded Old Crow Medicine Show in Ithaca, New York, with fellow musicians. As the band’s frontman and multi-instrumentalist, his infectious energy and love for roots music propelled them to success.

Their blend of Americana, Appalachian influences, and punk rock attitude earned them a Grammy Award and global recognition.

Beyond his musical endeavors, Secor co-founded the Episcopal School of Nashville and has explored songwriting and acting, showcasing his diverse talents and creativity.
