In a shocking revelation, Gilles disclosed her diagnosis with stage 1 ovarian cancer in December 2022 or January 2023, just months before clinching a remarkable bronze medal at the world championships alongside her partner, Paul Poirier, in March.
Despite the gravity of her diagnosis, Gilles has approached her journey with remarkable resilience and determination. Speaking to the Globe and Mail, she emphasized that her story isn’t about self-pity but rather about spreading awareness and urging women to prioritize their health.
“This isn’t a poor-me story,” Gilles asserted. “I don’t have cancer anymore. I’m good right now, but I just don’t want women to wait too long and find out it’s stage 4. I want them to listen to their bodies.”

Gilles revealed that her decision to undergo an appendectomy in December 2023 was a precautionary measure, undertaken because of uncertainties surrounding the nature of the tumor discovered on her left ovary.

Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledged the ongoing process of coming to terms with her diagnosis, particularly in light of her mother’s battle with brain cancer, which tragically ended in 2018. The mere mention of the word “cancer” evokes fear, underscoring the daunting nature of Gilles’ ordeal.
However, amidst the challenges and uncertainties, Gilles remains profoundly grateful for the opportunity to continue pursuing her passion for ice dancing. “I’m so incredibly grateful that I’m still able to do what I get to do every single day,” she expressed.
Gilles’ journey serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance and self-care, urging women to heed the signs and symptoms that their bodies may be communicating. Her courage in confronting adversity head-on and her unwavering determination to raise awareness embody the spirit of resilience and hope in the face of adversity.
As Gilles continues to navigate her recovery and inspire others with her resilience, her story stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the indomitable human spirit.
