Raised in Phoenix, Arizona, by parents of diverse backgrounds, Flemons was immersed in a melting pot of cultures.

His African American father hailed from Arkansas and Texas, while his Mexican American mother brought a rich heritage to the mix.

Influenced by his stepfather, Bill Dickey, a civil rights activist, Flemons grew up understanding the importance of cultural intersection.

Surrounded by music from an early age, Flemons was drawn to rhythmic instruments like drums and guitar, inspired by his mother’s flamenco dancing.

In 2005, Flemons’ journey took a pivotal turn at the Black Banjo Gathering, where he met fellow musicians Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson.

Together, they formed the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, reviving the African American string band tradition and bringing it to the forefront of American music.

Despite his success with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Flemons embarked on a solo career in 2008, earning the moniker “American Songster” for his mastery of diverse musical styles and instruments.

Through his solo albums, Flemons explores folk, blues, and Americana, shedding light on lesser-known narratives and celebrating overlooked figures in American history.

Beyond music, Flemons is dedicated to cultural preservation. Through his podcast, “The American Songster,” and educational initiatives, he shares his passion for music and history, inspiring younger generations to appreciate the rich tapestry of American heritage.
