Reports indicate that Yang, legally known as Yang Jun, is a father of two sons, whose concerns for their father’s well-being have only intensified as his situation grows increasingly dire.
Yang’s arrest in January 2019 on charges of espionage sent shockwaves through his family, with his children left grappling with the uncertainty and fear surrounding their father’s fate.
In a poignant plea to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in 2023, Yang’s sons implored for urgent action to negotiate their father’s release in Beijing, painting a distressing picture of his deteriorating health and the urgent need for intervention.

According to his children’s letter to Albanese, Yang has collapsed in prison and has been diagnosed with a 10cm cyst growing on his kidney, underscoring the severity of his medical condition.
They emphasized the “narrow window of opportunity” to secure their father’s release, citing the grave risk of him suffering the same fate as friends who have been subjected to medical maltreatment.
Despite their impassioned plea, Yang’s legal battle took a devastating turn in February 2024 when he was found guilty and handed a sentence of death with reprieve. This verdict has undoubtedly deepened the anguish of Yang’s family, who now face the grim reality of his uncertain future.
As calls for justice and compassion grow louder, the fate of Yang Hengjun and his family remains a poignant reminder of the enduring power of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
