Yannick Nézet-Séguin, celebrated Canadian conductor and pianist, owes much of his musical prowess and passion to the upbringing provided by his parents, Claudine Nézet and Serge Séguin.

Born in Montreal on March 6, 1975, to Claudine Nézet, an accomplished university lecturer and coordinator, and Serge P. Séguin, PhD, a distinguished university professor specializing in education, Yannick’s early exposure to the world of academia and education played a pivotal role in shaping his future.

From a tender age of five, Yannick Nézet-Séguin embarked on his musical journey, commencing piano lessons under the guidance of Jeanne-d’Arc Lebrun-Lussier.

It was during these formative years that he discovered his calling as an orchestra conductor at the young age of ten, setting the stage for a remarkable career in the world of classical music.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 6, 2021. Last week, the mayor of Philadelphia declared it “Philly Loves Yannick Week,” in celebration of him extending his contract with the Philadelphia Orchestra for four more years.

As he navigated through St-Isaac-Jogues Primary School, Collège Mont-Saint-Louis Secondary School, and Bois-de-Boulogne College, Yannick continued to hone his musical skills.

His commitment to excellence led him to the Conservatoire de musique du Québec, where he studied piano under Anisia Campos, earning five first prizes in piano and related musical subjects.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s educational journey extended beyond Montreal as he delved into choral conducting under the tutelage of Joseph Flummerfelt at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey.

Throughout his formative years, he participated in numerous masterclasses led by esteemed conductors such as George Benjamin, Roberto Carnevale, and Daniele Gat.

The rich educational background provided by Claudine Nézet and Serge Séguin laid the foundation for Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s illustrious career. Today, he stands as a prominent figure in the world of classical music, captivating audiences worldwide with his exceptional talent and leadership on the conductor’s podium.
