Despite the name “Boygenius,” the musical group is not composed of boys. In fact, the trio consists entirely of three incredibly talented female singer-songwriters: Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. The name “Boygenius” is somewhat misleading, as it playfully combines the words “boy” and “genius,” challenging traditional gender associations and norms.

The choice of this name is a deliberate and ironic move, highlighting the trio’s collective wit and subverting expectations. In an industry where female musicians have often been categorized or labeled in limiting ways, Boygenius embraces a name that defies gender norms and emphasizes the individual and collective genius of these three women.

The collaboration between Baker, Bridgers, and Dacus resulted in a self-titled EP released in 2018, showcasing their distinct musical styles and lyrical prowess. Despite the name’s potential for confusion, Boygenius stands as a testament to the power of women in music and their ability to create something extraordinary, regardless of conventional labels.
