The news was conveyed by Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba, who disclosed that President Geingob breathed his last in the early hours of Sunday, February 4, 2024, surrounded by his beloved wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and his children.

President Geingob’s death marks the end of an era for Namibia, as the nation loses a distinguished servant of the people, a revered liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of its constitution, and a pillar of the Namibian house, according to Vice-President Mbumba’s official statement.

“At this moment of deepest sorrow, I appeal to the nation to remain calm and collected while the Government attends to all necessary state arrangements, preparations, and other protocols. Further announcements in this regard will be made,” urged Vice-President Mbumba.

The 82-year-old leader had recently disclosed his battle with cancer to the public, revealing that he had been diagnosed with the illness. Last month, President Geingob’s office announced his plans to travel to the United States for medical treatment, with the intention of returning to Namibia on February 2.

The late president had a history of health challenges that preceded his election in 2014. In 2013, he underwent brain surgery, and the subsequent year, he bravely revealed his battle with prostate cancer, a fight he successfully conquered. In the previous year, Geingob shared that he had undergone aortic surgery in South Africa.

As Namibia grapples with the loss of President Hage Geingob, the nation mourns a figure whose contributions and legacy will endure in the annals of its history. The collective grief extends to the African continent, recognizing the impact of a leader who dedicated his life to the service of his people and the pursuit of a liberated, democratic Namibia.
