Persona 3 is the fourth main installment in the Persona series, which is part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise. It was originally released for the PlayStation 2 in Japan in 2006, and in North America in 2007. The game follows a group of high school students who form a secret club called SEES (Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad) to investigate a mysterious phenomenon known as the Dark Hour, a hidden period between one day and the next that only a few people can perceive.

During the Dark Hour, SEES explores a massive Tartarus tower, where they encounter and fight against creatures called Shadows, manifestations of human negative emotions. To combat the Shadows, each member of SEES can summon a Persona, a powerful manifestation of their inner self that reflects their personality and abilities.

One of the most distinctive features of Persona 3 is its dual gameplay system, which combines elements of role-playing and simulation games. During the day, the player can interact with various characters, attend school, join clubs, go shopping, and build social links with other characters. These social links represent the bonds that the player forms with different people, and they affect the strength and variety of the Personas that the player can create and use in battle.

During the night, the player can explore Tartarus and fight Shadows, gaining experience points, money, items, and new Personas. The player has to balance these two aspects of the game, as spending too much time in Tartarus can affect the player’s condition and performance during the day while neglecting Tartarus can result in dire consequences for the world.

Another notable aspect of Persona 3 is its dark and mature tone, which deals with themes such as death, grief, identity, sacrifice, and fate. The game explores how different characters cope with and accept death in a world surrounded by it, as well as how they find their own reasons for living.

The game also challenges the player to make difficult choices that have lasting impacts on the story and the characters. The game’s motto is “Memento Mori”, which means “Remember you will die” or “Remember your death”. This phrase reminds the player of their mortality and their responsibility for their own actions.

Persona 3 has received several enhanced versions and ports over the years. Persona 3 FES is an extended version that contains a new playable epilogue called The Answer, which provides more closure to the original game’s story. Persona 3 Portable is a portable version of the PlayStation Portable that adds an optional female protagonist and various quality-of-life changes, such as direct control over party members and fast travel options.

Persona 3 Portable was ported to several platforms in 2023, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Persona 3 Reload is a remake of the core game for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S that is scheduled for release in 2024. Persona 3 Reload will feature improved graphics, gameplay mechanics, voice acting, music, and additional content.
