C. Z. Guest, the renowned American actress, writer, horsewoman, and fashion designer, shared her life with Winston Frederick Churchill Guest, a distinguished polo champion with notable connections.

Winston Frederick Churchill Guest, the cousin of the iconic Winston Churchill and an heir to the Phipps steel fortune, became an integral part of C. Z. Guest’s life.

The two first crossed paths in 1944, and their connection deepened over time. In 1947, they sealed their love with a matrimonial ceremony held in Cuba, an event graced by the presence of renowned author Ernest Hemingway.

Reflecting on her husband, C. Z. Guest once expressed, “I was absolutely crazy about him. My God, he was devastating.” Their union resulted in the birth of two children, a daughter named Cornelia and a son named Alexander.

Winston Guest left an indelible mark in the realm of polo. He was a member of the international team of the United States, contributing to victories in the International Polo Cup in 1930, 1936, and 1939.

His prowess in the sport was further highlighted by achieving the top rating of ten goals, making him the only player in the history of the Indoor Polo Association with such a distinction.

In 1934, Winston Guest’s influence extended beyond the field as he was elected the head of the Indoor Polo Association. Collaborating with Elbridge T. Gerry as executive vice president and Michael G. Phipps as vice president, he played a crucial role in shaping the direction of indoor polo.

Tragically, Winston Frederick Churchill Guest passed away on October 25, 1982, at Nassau Hospital in Mineola, New York. His legacy lives on, not only as a polo champion but also as an integral part of the storied history shared with C. Z. Guest.
