According to the director Harold Ramis, the groundhog was not very cooperative and had to be handled with thick gloves. But soon, Phil realizes that his actions have no meaning or purpose. He becomes depressed and suicidal, and attempts to end his life in various ways. But every time he dies, he wakes up again on Groundhog Day.

Eventually, Phil decides to use his time loop as an opportunity to improve himself and his relationships. He learns new skills, such as playing the piano and ice sculpting. He helps out the townspeople with their problems and needs. He also falls in love with his producer Rita, played by Andie MacDowell, and tries to win her heart.
