Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that affects more than 8 million people in the United States. It is caused by an overactive immune system that leads to inflammation in the body. Psoriasis can also affect other organs and tissues, including the reproductive system.

According to several studies, psoriasis can lower testosterone levels in men. Testosterone is a hormone that plays an important role in sperm production, sperm motility, libido, and sexual function. Low testosterone can reduce the number and quality of sperm, making it harder to conceive naturally.

Psoriasis can also cause inflammation of the accessory sex glands, such as the seminal vesicles and the prostate gland. These glands produce the fluids that protect and transport sperm. Inflammation can damage these fluids and impair sperm quality and mobility.

The good news is that psoriasis treatments can help improve male fertility by reducing inflammation. Some biologic medications, such as anti-TNF agents, have been shown to increase testosterone levels and sperm count in men with psoriasis.

However, some other immunosuppressant medications, such as sulfasalazine, may hurt sperm quality. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor before starting or changing any psoriasis treatment if you are planning to have a baby.
