Psoriasis can affect any part of your skin, including your genitals. Genital psoriasis is more common in people who have psoriasis in other parts of their body. It can cause redness, itching, burning, and discomfort in the area around your genitals, anus, or buttocks. Genital psoriasis can also affect your sexual health and intimacy.

Genital psoriasis is not a sexually transmitted disease (STD), and it cannot be passed to your partner through sexual contact. However, some STDs can trigger or worsen psoriasis, so it is important to practice safe sex and get tested regularly if you are sexually active.

Psoriasis is not contagious, which means you cannot catch it from someone else or spread it to others by touching them. Psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system that makes your skin cells grow faster than normal. This results in patches of scaly, inflamed skin that can be triggered by various factors, such as stress, infections, medications, or injuries.

However, psoriasis can spread from one part of your body to another if you scratch or injure your skin. This is called the Koebner phenomenon, and it occurs in about 25% of people with psoriasis. To prevent this from happening, you should:

  • Keep your nails short and clean to avoid damaging your skin.
  • Moisturize your skin regularly to prevent dryness and cracking.
  • Use gentle soaps and shampoos that do not irritate your skin.
  • Avoid picking or peeling off the scales on your skin, as this can cause bleeding and infection.
  • Treat any cuts or wounds on your skin promptly with antiseptic and bandages.
  • Follow your doctor’s advice on how to manage your psoriasis and avoid triggers that may cause flare-ups.
