Jean Carnahan Obituary

The nation mourns the loss of Jean Anne Carnahan, an influential American politician, and accomplished writer, who served as the First Lady of Missouri from 1993 to 2000.

She peacefully departed this life on January 30, 2024, at the age of 90.

Born on December 20, 1933, in Washington, D.C., Jean Carnahan grew up in the nation’s capital, the daughter of a plumber father and a hairdresser mother.

Her journey in public service began when her husband, Mel Carnahan, was elected governor of Missouri in 1992. During his two terms, Jean dutifully served as the first lady, making significant contributions to the state.

Tragedy struck the Carnahan family when Mel Carnahan was posthumously elected to the U.S. Senate. In a historic move, Jean Carnahan, a Democrat, was appointed to fill her late husband’s Senate seat, becoming the first woman to represent Missouri in the U.S. Senate. She served in the Senate from January 3, 2001, to November 25, 2002.

In her poignant Senate speech, she reflected on the unusual circumstances that brought her to the chamber, stating, “My name has never been on a ballot. On election night, there was no victory celebration. You are here because of your win. I am here because of my loss. But we are all here to do the work of this great nation.”

Roy Temple, a longtime aide to the Carnahans and Jean Carnahan’s chief of staff, described her as a person of boundless intelligence, wit, and creativity. Whether planning a party or advocating for legislation, she approached everything with enthusiasm and dedication.

Jean Carnahan was not only a political figure but also a prolific author, having written seven books. Her literary contributions include two works about the Missouri governor’s mansion and an autobiography focusing on her years as first lady and senator.

To honor her memory, a private family service will be held at Carson Hill Cemetery near Ellsinore, Missouri, where she will rest beside her husband and son. Additionally, a public service is in the works in St. Louis, with details to be announced.
