The Serbian national Sergej began his professional career with Vojvodina.
After passing through the youth ranks of Vojvodina, Sergej was promoted to the senior team in 2012.
He signed his first professional contract with the club on December 26, 2012.
After his stints with Vojvodina, Sergej went ahead to join Belgian club Genk, signing a five-year deal with the club in June 2014.
He made his Genk debut in a 1–1 home league draw with Cercle Brugge on August 2, 2014.

During the 2014–15 season, he scored a total of five league goals in 24 appearances.
Sergej left Genk to sign with Italian side Lazio on July 31, 2015.
Following his eight-season spell with Lazio, he signed a three-year deal with Saudi Professional League club Al Hilal on July 12, 2023.
Sergej also represented the Serbia national team at under-19, under-20, and under-20 before calling up to the senior team in October 2015.
