Xeroderma, also known as dry skin, is a common condition that affects many people. It occurs when the outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum) lacks enough moisture, resulting in cracks and flakes on the skin surface.

Xeroderma can cause itching, irritation, redness and inflammation of the skin. There are many possible causes of xeroderma, such as:

Environmental factors: Cold or dry weather, low humidity, excessive air conditioning, direct heat, sun damage, wind and pollution can all dry out the skin.

Age-related factors: As people age, their skin produces less oil and collagen, which help keep the skin moist and elastic. This leads to thinner and drier skin that is more prone to wrinkles and sagging.
Co-morbid states: Certain diseases and conditions can affect the skin’s ability to retain moisture, such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, kidney disease, malnutrition and weight loss. Some medications can also cause xeroderma as a side effect, such as diuretics, retinoids and chemotherapy drugs.
Skin care habits: Overbathing, using harsh soaps or detergents, scrubbing or rubbing the skin too hard, wearing rough or tight clothing, and applying alcohol-based products can all strip the skin of its natural oils and moisture. Some people may also have allergic or irritant reactions to certain ingredients in cosmetics or topical products.
