Formenton, whose NHL rights are held by the Ottawa Senators, had a promising start in the 2021–22 season with the Ottawa Senators. He showcased his skills as a solid penalty killer, making a valuable contribution to the team.

However, in November of that season, Formenton’s journey took an unforeseen turn when he contracted COVID-19, subsequently placing him in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. Despite this setback, he managed to conclude the season with commendable stats, recording 18 goals and 32 points in 79 games.

As the 2021–22 season concluded, the Senators and Formenton found themselves at a contractual impasse. The inability to reach an agreement led to Formenton becoming an unrestricted free agent. With the NHL season looming, negotiations between the two parties proved fruitless, rendering Formenton ineligible to participate in the 2022–23 NHL season.

In a surprising move, Formenton signed with Swiss club HC Ambrì-Piotta of the National League (NL) on December 14, 2022. However,  after joining the Swiss team, Formenton faced another unexpected turn of events.

On January 24, 2024, HC Ambrì-Piotta announced that Formenton had been granted a leave of absence for personal reasons, and he would be returning to Canada.

The shocking revelation came to a head on January 28, when Formenton voluntarily surrendered himself to the London police. He faced charges in connection with an alleged sexual assault dating back to 2018. The incident added a layer of complexity to the challenges Formenton was already navigating in his professional career.
