Born December 3, 1986, in Wayzata, Minnesota, United States, James commenced his football playing career at Wayzata High School.

Following high school, he committed to the Ohio State University where he played for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team and was drafted by St. Louis Rams in the 2009 NFL Draft.
