Cindy Sherman is an American artist best known for her disguised photographic self-portraits, depicting herself in many different contexts directed towards social role-playing and sexual stereotypes.

Cynthia Morris Sherman was born on January 19, 1954, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, in the United States of America. Cindy Sherman enrolled in the visual arts department at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo in 1972 where she began painting, later switching her major to photography.

During the 1980s, Cindy Sherman began to use color film, to exhibit very large prints, and to concentrate more on lighting and facial expression. Cindy Sherman and David Byrne were members of Portugal’s Estoril Film Festival’s jury in 2009.
Cindy Sherman’s career has ventured into the fashion industry with designs for Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Marc Jacobs. In 1997 she directed the dark comedic film Office Killer.
Cindy Sherman created photographs for an editorial in Harper’s Bazaar in 1993. In 1994, she produced the Post Card Series for Comme des Garçons for the brand’s autumn/winter 1994–95 collections in collaboration with Rei Kawakubo.
