Despite a late-season defensive resurgence and notable improvements, the Packers chose to make changes in their coaching staff, signaling a significant shift in their defensive strategy.

CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones reported that while Barry’s departure was confirmed, other members of the Packers’ defensive staff were given the freedom to explore job opportunities. However, lateral moves to other teams might not be allowed, adding an additional layer of complexity to the coaching changes.

Head coach Matt LaFleur, in a carefully worded statement, thanked Joe Barry for his commitment and contributions to the team’s success over the past three seasons. LaFleur acknowledged the difficulty of such decisions, emphasizing Barry as one of the best individuals he has had the privilege to work with in the league.

Throughout Joe Barry’s tenure as defensive coordinator, the Packers’ defensive rankings were mid-tier, holding the No. 17 spot in yards allowed per game (335.1) and the No. 10 position in scoring defense, allowing an average of 20.6 points per game. Despite these rankings, the team experienced a late-season turnaround, particularly in run defense.

The Packers’ defense exhibited a remarkable transformation in the latter part of the regular season. Ranking 31st in opponent rushing yards per game (141.8) from Weeks 1-14, the team surged to the 4th spot, allowing only 84.3 rushing yards per game in Weeks 15-18.

The final two weeks of the regular season saw the Packers boasting the best defense in the NFL, allowing the fewest points (9.5) and yards (201.5) per game.

This late-season defensive momentum carried into the postseason, with the Packers’ defense forcing two crucial turnovers in a significant victory against the Dallas Cowboys. However, despite these positive developments, the Packers’ 2023 campaign concluded with a loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Coach LaFleur had previously stated in November  2023,that he had no plans to fire Joe Barry midseason. The decision to part ways was seemingly postponed until the culmination of the season, indicating a thoughtful and strategic approach to coaching changes within the organization.
