Born Franz Reuther in Kirn, western Germany, Farian initially embarked on a solo music career, achieving success with a schlager rendition of the country song “Rocky” in 1976. It was during this period that he conceptualized the idea for Boney M, a disco ensemble featuring four West Indian vocalists and dancers.

Boney M, under Farian’s guidance, achieved global chart-topping success with hits such as “Daddy Cool” (1976), “Ma Baker” (1977), “Rasputin” (1978), and “Rivers of Babylon” (1978). Farian, contributing the deep-voiced male vocals in the studio, collaborated with Bobby Farrell, the male face of the group responsible for live performances.

Before pursuing a career in the music industry, Farian trained as a chef, and he often likened his approach to producing chart-topping hits to cooking. He emphasized the importance of the right ingredients, including a fantastic interpreter with a good voice, a catchy song with a memorable melody, and a chorus.

Farian’s multifaceted career extended to founding the Latin pop band No Mercy and the pop group Milli Vanilli. Despite the controversies surrounding Milli Vanilli, Farian’s impact on the music industry was undeniable.

Throughout his illustrious career, Farian sold over 850 million records and earned an impressive 800 gold and platinum certifications. His work resonated with audiences worldwide, and his contributions were recognized with widespread acclaim.

Liz Mitchell, a Jamaican-born British singer who was part of the original Boney M lineup, paid tribute to Farian’s legacy, stating, “We shared and united under a star which rose above and beyond what we ever dared to expect.”

“I say well done to the work that we did. Rest in peace Frank.” The world bids farewell to a musical maestro whose influence will endure through the melodies he crafted.
