Who opened the gates of Ram Mandir?

In the 1980s, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other Hindu nationalist groups and political parties launched a campaign to construct the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir (“Rama birthplace temple”) at the site. In 1985, the Rajiv Gandhi government allowed Hindus to access the site for prayers.

The temple is designed by celebrated architect Chandrakant B Sompura, in collaboration with son Ashish. Here’s a full description of the Ram Mandir as shared by the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath on Wednesday said that Rajiv Gandhi was the first person to open the locks of the then Babri Mosque in Ayodhya in 1985 and that no one should take credit for the Ram Temple.

While speaking to the media on the occasion of Ram Mandir’s bhoomi puja today, Kamal Nath said, “Today is a historic day. The construction of Ram temple started today which was being aspired to by every Indian for a long time.”
