Lincoln MacCauley Alexander, a distinguished Canadian lawyer and politician, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of October 19, 2012, at the age of 90.

Lincoln Alexander’s passing was met with profound expressions of mourning and respect. The national and provincial flags outside the Ontario Legislative Building were lowered to half-mast, and tributes poured in from various viceroys and politicians, reflecting the widespread recognition of his contributions.

In the wake of his death, Alexander’s body lay in state, initially inside the Ontario Legislative Building at Queen’s Park, and later at Hamilton City Hall. This public display of reverence allowed people to pay their respects to a man who had left an indelible mark on Canadian politics and jurisprudence.

Survived by his son Keith Lincoln Alexander, from his first marriage to Yvonne Harrison, Lincoln Alexander’s legacy extended to his family. He was also survived by daughter-in-law Joyce Alexander and grandchildren Erika and Marissa Alexander. In addition, his second wife, Marni Beal, whom he married in 2011, shared in the grief of his passing.

An Ontario state funeral was accorded to Lincoln Alexander, a testament to the profound impact he had on the province and the nation. The Reverend Allison Barrett conducted the funeral, which was marked by the cooperation of thousands of officials, both provincial and federal, and police services across Canada.

The funeral, held at Hamilton Place, drew a gathering of 1,500 people who came to pay their respects. Among those in attendance were then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, then-Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Governor General David Johnston, former Governor General Michaëlle Jean, former Prime Minister Joe Clark, federal cabinet minister Julian Fantino, and distinguished figures from academia, including Dr. Alastair Summerlee and Dr. Peter George.
