Trai Byers’ journey began in Kansas City, Kansas, where he was born. After spending a year of high school in his hometown, he completed his high school education in Georgia. Byers continued his academic pursuits, graduating from Andrew College with an associate degree in Theater. He further honed his skills at the University of Kansas, earning a bachelor’s degree in communications. His dedication to the craft led him to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles and the prestigious Yale School of Drama.

In 2009, Trai Byers made his screen debut in the comedy-horror film “Caesar and Otto’s Summer Camp Massacre.” His early roles included a recurring character on the ABC daytime soap opera “All My Children” in 2011 and a part in The CW teen soap “90210” the following year. Byers showcased his versatility by starring in films like “Destination Planet Negro” (2013) and “Jayhawkers” (2014), both directed by Kevin Willmott. Notably, he portrayed civil rights activist James Forman in Ava DuVernay’s historical epic film “Selma” (2014).

Byers’ breakthrough came with his role as Andre Lyon in the Fox music-industry primetime soap opera “Empire,” a character he portrayed from 2015 to 2020. His compelling performance earned him two NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The success of “Empire” solidified Trai Byers as a talented actor with the ability to bring depth and authenticity to his characters.

In 2020, Trai Byers took on a new challenge by co-writing and starring in the historical drama film “The 24th.” The film, exploring significant historical events, garnered positive reviews from critics, showcasing Byers’ multifaceted talents. In 2022, he made his Broadway debut in August Wilson’s play “The Piano Lesson,” marking a significant milestone in his career. Byers continued to expand his repertoire in 2023 with a guest-starring role in the comedy series “Harlem.”
