Shawnacy Campbell Barber, the Canadian pole vault champion who left an indelible mark on the world of track and field, passed away on January 17, 2024, at his home in Kingwood, Texas.

At the time of his untimely death at the age of 29, Barber did not have any children.

Barber’s extraordinary career was characterized by numerous accolades, including being the Canadian record holder in the men’s pole vault with a remarkable height of 6.00m, achieved in January 2016 in Reno, Nevada.

His prowess extended to the global stage, where he secured the 2015 world championships in Beijing, China, with an impressive mark of 5.90m.

The talented athlete’s collegiate journey saw him clinch the NCAA outdoor title in 2015 while representing the University of Akron.

Barber’s commitment to excellence was evident in earning back-to-back indoor titles during the same season, a testament to his dedication to the sport. Additionally, he secured five Canadian titles, further solidifying his status as a dominant force in pole vaulting.

Barber’s remarkable career reached its pinnacle when he made the final at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, competing in a pole vault event ultimately won by Thiago Braz of Brazil. His achievements on the international stage reflected not only his athletic prowess but also his resilience and determination.

Despite facing health challenges in the later part of his life, Shawnacy Barber’s impact on the track and field community was undeniable. His management agency shared the heartbreaking news of his passing on Instagram, stating, “A friend that will never be forgotten.

Barber is survived by his mother, Ann; father, George; and brother, David.
