However, behind his cricketing prowess is a legacy of sportsmanship passed down from his father, Steve Bruce, a versatile athlete who excelled not only in social cricket but also in representative rugby for King Country.

For Tom Bruce, the journey into the world of sports began within the confines of a supportive and athletic family. His father, Steve Bruce, may have been a social cricketer, but his influence reached beyond the cricket field into the realm of representative rugby.

The entire Bruce family, bound by a love for sports, actively engaged in fostering Tom’s passion for cricket during his formative years. Recalling his upbringing, Tom acknowledges the pivotal role his family played in shaping his love for sports.

“Playing sport is in the blood, so I’m not sure what I’d be doing if I wasn’t playing,” reflects the lanky cricketer.  His family’s involvement in giving him cricket throw downs and nurturing his skills contributed to his early development as an athlete.

While Tom explored rugby, representing Canterbury B at a competitive level, it became evident that his true calling lay in cricket. “I enjoyed rugby but I knew I was always better at cricket,” he acknowledges. This self-awareness led him to pursue a cricketing journey that would eventually see him don the national colors for New Zealand.

In the winter of a pivotal year, Tom jetted off to England to hone his cricketing skills at Harfordshire CC in Shenley Village, a testament to his commitment to continuous improvement and growth as a cricketer.

Tom Bruce made his mark on the international cricket scene on January 3, 2017, when he debuted in T20I for New Zealand against Bangladesh. Beyond his international endeavors, he is also a first-class cricketer, contributing his talents to Central Districts.
