Born on August 24, 1986, in Providence, Rhode Island, Kali Reis is the youngest of five children. Her formative years were spent in a three-bedroom apartment in East Providence, Rhode Island, where she was primarily raised by her mother, Patricia.

Growing up with her two older brothers, Aaron and Andrew, Kali Reis discovered both acting and boxing relatively late in life. The Reis family faced its share of challenges, with Frank, Kali’s father, being in and out of her life.

Eventually, he moved to Florida, leaving a void that Kali navigated with the support of her two teenage brothers. Despite the hardships, Kali Reis emerged stronger, carrying the lessons and resilience instilled by her upbringing into her boxing career.

Kali Reis proudly embraces her diverse heritage, being of Cape Verdean ancestry and also having Native American roots, specifically Cherokee, Nipmuc, and Seaconke Wampanoag descent. As a child, she actively participated in and competed in powwows, immersing herself in the traditions of her heritage.

The name “Mequinonoag,” meaning “many feathers” or “many talents,” holds a special significance for Kali. It serves as her boxing nickname, “K.O. Mequinonoag,” a title given to her by her mother, Patricia. Patricia Reis is recognized as “the medicine woman of our Seaconke Wampanoag tribe,” a testament to the deep connection Kali maintains with her Native American roots.
