Beyond his achievements on the field, Baker’s legacy extends into his personal life, where he shared a fulfilling journey with his wife, Edith Edens, and their four children.

Art Baker, who passed away on January 14, 2024, at the age of 94, was more than just a renowned football coach. His coaching career spanned several institutions, with notable stints at Furman University (1973–1977), The Citadel (1978–1982), and East Carolina University (1985–1988).

A proud graduate of Edmunds High School and Presbyterian College, Baker’s passion for football began to flourish during his playing years for the Blue Hose from 1950 to 1952, where he showcased his skills as a halfback.

Transitioning from player to coach, Baker’s journey included serving as an assistant coach at Clemson under Frank Howard and later at Texas Tech from 1970 to 1972. His coaching acumen and leadership qualities were evident when he took the helm at Furman in 1973, succeeding Bob King.

During his tenure, Baker not only contributed to Furman’s success but also played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of coaching luminaries like Dick Sheridan, Jimmy Satterfield, and Bobby Johnson, all of whom went on to become head coaches at Furman.

However, it is his role as a family man that adds a heartwarming dimension to Art Baker’s legacy. At the time of his passing, Baker and his wife Edith Edens had four children and four grandchildren. This testament to his commitment to both football and family highlights the multifaceted nature of the man who left an enduring impact on the lives of those he coached and loved.
