If you grew up chewing Fruit Stripe Gum, you might be sad to hear that it has been officially discontinued by its manufacturer, Ferrara Candy Co. The company confirmed the news to Food & Wine and CNN this week, saying that it was a “difficult decision” to stop producing the iconic rainbow-striped gum.

Fruit Stripe Gum was first introduced in 1969 by Beech-Nut. Each stick of gum had colorful stripes on it, and the wrappers featured a zebra mascot named Yipes. The slogan “Yipes! Stripes!” was often used in promotional campaigns for the candy.

The tattoos featured Yipes doing various activities like skateboarding, surfing, or playing soccer. However, the gum also had a reputation for losing its flavor very quickly, which became a running joke among fans and even appeared in a Family Guy episode.

Over the years, Fruit Stripe Gum changed hands several times, as Beech-Nut was acquired by Life Savers, then by Hershey, then by Farley’s & Sathers, and finally by Ferrara in 2012.

Ferrara did not give a specific reason for discontinuing Fruit Stripe Gum, but it might have something to do with declining sales or changing consumer preferences. Fruit Stripe Gum was also facing competition from other colorful and fruity gums like Juicy Fruit, Hubba Bubba, and Trident Tropical Twist.
