Encouraged by the support of his family and friends, Willem decided to embark on a remarkable journey by auditioning for the 2006 edition of Nouvelle Star. His initial audition performance, where he showcased his vocal abilities with “Strong Enough” by Des’ree, left a lasting impression on the judges.

The judges, taken aback by the unexpected quality of his voice, were pleasantly surprised, especially considering Willem’s unassuming appearance. Marianne James, one of the Nouvelle Star judges, affectionately nicknamed him “La Tortue” (The Turtle).

Despite any preconceived notions, Willem’s talent and charisma propelled him to become a standout contestant. On 8 June, he achieved the remarkable feat of being crowned the fourth Nouvelle Star, marking the beginning of his illustrious career in the music industry.
